The Shahadatayn

The Shahadah is the statement in which one testifies that there is no God, in truth (worthy of worship) except Allah  and that Muhammad (sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam) is the Messenger of Allah. More accurately it is called the shahadatayn as it is two statements, rather than one. (The "ayn" ending denotes two things).  These statements are made when one enters into the fold of Islam. It is also said in the 5 daily prayers and in other instances.

The shahadatayn is the first pillar of Islam.
