Gratitude & Thankfulness

 gratitude and thankfulness

And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed:
"If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah),
I will give you more (of My Blessings),
but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers),
verily! My Punishment is indeed severe."
14:7

Pillars of Gratitude

Pillars of Gratitude
Audio of Shaykh Abdul Aziz Ar-Rajihi, with English written translation
A quick benefit (duration: 1:06)

From the audio:

The three pillars of gratitude:

1) Acknowledgement of the blessing
2) Attributing the blessing to its bestower, Allah
3) Utilizing that blessing in what Allah loves and is pleased with.

"It is a must to recognize the blessing, speak about it, and to praise its granter."

Short audio (1:43) of a question asked to and answered by the Shaykh:

How does a person show gratitude for one’s blessings? And what is obligatory upon the Muslim towards these abundant blessings which cannot be enumerated or counted?

The answer is given in audio form and underneath it is a summary of the pillars of gratitude.

Ayaat, Ahadith related to gratitude

How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him”.

Benefitting from Being Happy with what Allah has Provided

It is reported that Al-Ḥasan Al-Baṣrī – Allāh have mercy on him – said: Whoever is happy (satisfied) with what Allāh has apportioned for him, it will suffice him and Allāh will bless it for him, but whoever is not satisfied, then [what is apportioned for him] will not suffice him and it will not be blessed.

The Link Between Blessings and Gratitude

It is reported that ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib – Allāh be pleased with him – said: Blessings arrive with gratitude [to Allāh], and gratitude is connected with more [blessings], and the two are tied together: more blessings from Allāh will never stop unless gratitude from the servant stops.

When Blessings Turn to Blight

It is reported that Al-Hasan Al-Basrī – Allāh have mercy on him – said: Verily, Allāh lets [a person] enjoy a blessing for as long as He wills. But when He is no longer thanked for it, He turns it into a punishment.

Duaa/thikr

Mu’adh (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) took hold of my hand and said, “O Mu’adh! By Allah I love you, so I advise you to never forget to recite after every prayer:

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ، وَشُكْرِكَ، وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
“Allâhumma a’innî alâ dhikrika, wa shukrika, wa husni ‘ibâdatika
O Allah, help me remember You, to be grateful to You, and to worship You in an excellent manner”
[Abu Dawud] [Book 16, Hadith 1422]
