Jumuah (Friday)

Indeed, there is an hour (opportune time) on Friday
 and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, 
then Allah will definitely meet his demand. 
And he (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) pointed out 
the shortness of that time with his hands.




  • Jumuah (Yawmul Jumuah) is Friday in Arabic.  
  • The word Jumuah comes from a word meaning "to gather." Muslims gather together on Jumuah for the Jumuah prayer.

O you who believe (Muslims)! 
When the call is proclaimed for the Salât (prayer) on Friday (Jumu'ah prayer), 
come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu'ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salât (prayer)] and
 leave off business (and every other thing).
That is better for you if you did but know!  
Then when the (Jumu'ah) Salât (prayer) is ended, 
you may disperse through the land, and seek the bounty of Allah (by working),
 and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.
(62:9-10)

Significance of Jumuah

Here are some of the occurrences that have occurred or occur on Jumuah, according to Tafsir Ibn Kathir's Tafsir of Suratul Jumuah:

  • Allah created Adam, the first man, on a Jumuah
  • Adam was placed in Jannah (and taken out of it) on a Jumuah
  • The Day of Judgment will occur on a Jumuah
  • There is an hour on Jumuah where "no faithful servant asks Allah for something good, but Allah will give him what he asked for."
  • Muslims gather on Jumuah for the Jumuah prayer

    Etiquette of Jumuah

     Among the etiquettes of Jumuah (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
    • Make Ghusl (take a bath)
    • Wear our best clothes
    • Apply perfume (oil)
    • Use miswak (a tooth stick)
    • Leave the house early
    • Sit close to the Imam
    • Listen to khutbah without talking
     Narrated Salman Al-Farsi: Allah’s Apostle (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said,

    “Anyone who takes a bath on Friday and cleans himself as much as he can and puts oil (on his hair) or scents himself; and then proceeds for the prayer and does not force his way between two persons (assembled in the mosque for the Friday prayer), and prays as much as is written for him and remains quiet when the Imam delivers the Khutba, all his sins in between the present and the last Friday will be forgiven.”

    Greeting on Jumuah???

    Sheikh Fawzan was asked the following question:
    Every Friday one of my colleagues sends me a text saying “Ju’muaah Mubaarak” and he continues saying that he hopes that I will add that to my cell phone greeting or to my greeting on the internet forums; what is your view of this?

    Answer: Sheikh Fawzan
    This is an innovation, Allah has not sent down any authority for this action. This is an action that is not known or narrated in the Sunnah; it has not been narrated that the Muslims should congratulate each other on Friday; rather it has only been reported that they would congratulate each other on Eid Al Adha and Eid Al Fitr not on Friday. Therefore putting this is a text and encouraging others to do it is an innovation and from spreading innovation.

    Sheikh Abdul Musin Al Abaad was asked the following question:
    Based on the premise that Friday is a (Eid) holiday, is it permissible to greet each other saying, Ju’muaah Mubaarak or Ju’muaah Accepted?
    Answer: Sheikh Abdul Musin Al Abaad:
    By Allah, we don’t know of anything that proves the validity of this. As for the two Eids then it has been narrated that the companions when they would meet each other they would say, “May Allah accept it from us and you” or “May Allah accept your obedience”.

    The Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz was asked the following question:
    What is the ruling on the statement Ju’muaah Mubaarak?
    Answer: Sheikh Abdul Aziz
    There is no origin for sending out the greeting Ju’muaah Mubaarak on the cell phones. It is a bless day, no doubt. Allah the Exalted has singled us out with this day, and the Jews and Christians have been lead astray away from this day, but as for giving a greeting every Friday then we don’t know of any origin for this.

    Duaas on Jumuah

    Reported by al-Bukharee and Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

    "Indeed, there is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand. And he (salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands." (Source)

    When is the Hour to Make Duaas?

    There are two opinions concerning the hour of response on Friday which are likely to be correct:
    • The first is that it lasts from after ‘Asr until the sun sets, for those who sit and wait for Maghrib, whether that is in the mosque or at home, making du’aa’ to their Lord, whether they are men or women; whoever does that is more deserving of seeing a response to his or her du’aa’. But men should not pray Maghrib or any other prayer at home unless they have a legitimate shar’i excuse, as is well known from the evidence of sharee’ah.
    •  The second is that it lasts from the time when the imaam sits on the minbar to deliver the khutbah on Friday until he finishes the prayer.
    Du’aa’ at either of these times is deserving of being answered.
    These two times are more likely to be the times of response on Friday, because of the saheeh ahaadeeth which indicate that. The hour of response may also be sought at other times of the day.

    And the bounty of Allaah is great.

    Among the moments when response may come to a du’aa’ in all prayers, obligatory and naafil alike, is the moment of sujood (prostration), because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The closest that a person may be to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so say a great deal of du’aa’ in sujood.” (Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), in al-Salaah, 482).

    And Muslim (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated in his Saheeh from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “As for rukoo’ (bowing), proclaim the greatness of your Lord in rukoo’ and strive in du’aa’, for you will be more deserving of being responded to.” (Muslim, al-Salaah, 479).

       Fasting on Jumuah 

      Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: 
      I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) as saying: “None of you should observe fast on Friday except that he should observe fast either one day before it or one day after it.’‘
