A mus-haf is an actual, physical copy of the Quraan.
What special care should we take when handling it?
Placement of a Mus-haf
A small reminder (from some old recordings); Shaikh al-Albānī رحمه الله advised to keep the mus-haf (copy of Qur’ān) on top of other books - not to put it underneath a pile...in maintaining etiquette with the Qur’ān.— Abu Muadh Taqweem (@AbuMuadhTaqweem) April 11, 2020

Damaged/Torn Mus-haf
Question: I have a Mushaf and its papers are torn. What should I do with it? Should I bury it?Answer : Praise be to Allah Alone, and prayers and peace be upon the last Messenger Muhammad, his family and companions.
It is permissible for you to bury it in a mosque or burn it as 'Uthman bin 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) did.
May Allah grant us prosperity. Peace and prayers be upon our Prophet Muhammad.

It should be picked up & held with the right hand as the main hand, since the left is generally for affairs of purification etc.
